William M. Purdy III

William “Bill” Purdy III, 75, of Arlington, Va., died peacefully while surrounded by his family on February 10, 2016.  Bill was the son of William and Irma Purdy.  He was born August 23, 1940 in Fall River, MA and graduated from Monsignor James Coyle High School and University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth.  He later earned a graduate degree from Harvard Business School. A naval engineer by training, Bill worked for Admiral Hyman Rickover in the Navy’s Nuclear Propulsion Program where he was design manager for the SSN 688 Los Angeles Submarine Class.  After graduate school, he spent over 30 years at American Management System (AMS) growing the firm’s Navy start-up business to a huge defense enterprise for this 10,000 person, publicly-listed, global business and information technology consulting firm.  He held a number of senior roles at AMS, including Chief Operating Officer and Chief Executive Officer, before retiring in 2002.  He later joined management and technology consulting and engineering services firm Booz Allen Hamilton from 2003 to 2015.  Bill was one of 30 Executive Vice Presidents at the 22,000 employee firm and held key leadership responsibilities in Booz Allen’s engineering, federal civil agency divisions, and Navy businesses. Bill was known for his successful business contributions coupled with an abiding interest in those around him, his mentorship of employees, and his ability to forge deep and lasting friendships at all levels.  He was a long-time Board member of the Washington Home & Hospice Group. He loved boating, the Boston Red Sox, and spending time at his summer home in the Megansett community of Falmouth, MA. Bill is survived by his wife Linda Metz, son Steven Purdy of London, England, daughter Rachel Heilman of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and step-sons Alex and Nathan Cvrk of Virginia.  He is the grandfather of Marin and Finn Purdy as well as Kate and Matthew Heilman. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Bill’s honor to made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK  73123-1718. The funeral service will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Georgetown, Washington, DC.  Expressions of condolences may be sent to the family at Murphy Funeral Home, 1102 West Broad Street, Falls Church, VA 22046. Visiting hours will be held from 10:00-11:00 AM on Sunday, February 21 at the Chapman Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 584 West Falmouth Highway (Route 28A), WEST FALMOUTH. Burial will follow in the North Falmouth Cemetery on Old Main Road.
