Cape Wind farm is no debate

Dear Sir:

My husband and I attended a debate last evening between Mr. Gordon of Cape Wind and Ms. Nickerson of the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound. We are members of the Lexington Global Warming Action Coalition, a citizen group trying to raise awareness of global climate change . Last fall, we attended a talk given by Matt Palmer of Clean Power Now and learned about the proposed windfarm.  We are concerned about the environment and are worried about global warming and its effects on Massachusetts and the world. Mr. Palmer's presentation assured us that wind energy providing electricity to Cape Cod was a wonderful alternative to coal, gas, or oil-fired power plants.

I read the Alliance's website and was eager to hear Ms. Nickerson's presentation.   Mr. Gordon spoke for the windfarm project and included facts about energy needs and availability, emissions from power plants and air quality,  potential effects of global warming and the physical appearance of the windturbines in Nantucket Sound. Ms. Nickerson spoke for the opponents of the windfarm, but gave a very vague, weak argument with few facts. Her arguments that tourism and whale breeding would be harmed and that the view will be diminished were disputed by Mr. Gordon with facts.

Our conclusion was that Ms. Nickerson had no valid points, lacked facts that could support her argument and did little but complain about the view.   Mr. Gordon explained that in Denmark, the coastal tourism industry has thrived after their windfarms were installed, in part due to the view.

In my mind, there is no debate. We hope the windfarm will be approved and  built as soon as possible.
