ZBA, selectmen must not approve Island firing range

Editor:

Although I am off Island for the winter months, a vexing issue has arisen which should be made of interest by the Independent.   The Nantucket Hunting Association has applied for a special permit to conduct a firing range east of the airport. The new hearing date is November 15th.

Residents and homeowners of the Village of Madaquecham, Wigwam Road, are upset and are making their objections known to both the ZBA and the Selectmen.  Issues regarding noise from the firing range, potential danger from errant shots, potential use of semi-automatic weapons, are just a few of the concerns of the residents.

Their traquil location on Nantucket will be shattered if the Zoning Board approves the special permit.  I suggest that the Independent do an indepth investigation regarding this matter.
