Cape Cod Writers Center celebrates its 50th anniversary this August

One of the oldest broad-based writers conferences in the country

"50 Years of Inspiration and Instruction" - August 5-10 in Hyannis

The Cape Cod Writers Center, one of the oldest broad-based writers conferences in the nation and the oldest such conference in Massachusetts, announces the 50th Cape Cod Writers Center Conference, August 5-10th at the Resort & Conference Center of Hyannis.

In honor of the Center’s Golden Anniversary, Therese Murray, President of the Massachusetts Senate, will open the conference on Sunday evening, August 5th.

Keeping pace with the dramatic changes taking place in publishing through social media and e-books, the Cape Cod Writers Center remains devoted to assisting published and aspiring writers to enhance their literary skills embrace new media and technology, and ready their work for publication.

Distinguished 2012 guests include keynotes and best-selling authors Joseph Finder and Andre Dubus III, as well as Beacon Press Executive Editor Amy Caldwell. Additionally, the Conference hosts other prominent authors, poets, screenwriters, digital gurus and media experts including novelist Matthew Pearl, Boston Poet Laureate Sam Cornish, Memoir writer Lee Harrington, Humor Writer Gina Barreca, and Pulitzer Prize nominee Vivian Shipley.

“The 2012 conference will celebrate 50 years of an enduring literary tradition amidst sun, sand and sea,” observed Kevin Symmons, President of the Cape Cod Writers Center. “This year we proudly offer our attendees expanded classes, new courses and an opportunity to mingle with publishing experts and peers.”

As in years past attendees will:

  • Network with nationally-published authors, agents, editors and publishers
  • Participate in manuscript evaluations
  • Consult with media
  • Improve their promotion, publicity and marketing skills
  • Meet digital experts and discuss websites, content, blogging and more
  • Sell their books through the conference bookstore

“At a time when publishing industry is in transition, it is gratifying to see that the literary impulse remains strong and continues to draw aspiring authors, poets and screenwriters to our conference,” says Nancy Rubin Stuart, conference director and Executive Director of the Cape Cod Writers Center. “Now as for the past fifty years, the Cape Cod Writers Center provides year-round programs, literary craft sessions, youth education programs, and opportunities for writers culminating in our signature summer event.”

The Cape Cod Writers Center has hosted a summer writer’s conference since 1963. Initially a regional writers’ retreat, today the conference commands national attention and draws well-known publishing stars to beautiful Cape Cod every summer. Over the years, presenters included Kurt Vonnegut, Isaac Asimov, Art Buchwald, Jacques Barzun, Marge Piercy, Mary Higgins Clark, Dennis Lehane, Nathaniel Philbrick, Eleanor Clift, Ted Kooser, and more recently, Malachy McCourt, William Martin, Lisa Genova and Colum McCann.

Other Cape Cod Writers Center year-round programming includes:
