Costly tag contains important research data
The UMASS Large Pelagic Research Center is conducting a study on leatherback turtles on Nantucket Sound. Last Thursday the group lost contact with one of the research tags when it detached from a turtle.
The tag is encased in orange foam and has reflected tape on it and an antenna protruding from the top. If found, it will be floating on the surface of the water.
In addition the $5,000 price tag on the monitor, it contains valuable data about sea turtles.
With the prevailing SW winds, UMASS researchers expect the tag to wash up along the shore anywhere between South Dennis and Monomoy.
The following reward is being offered for the return of the monitor: cash reward, four 2-lb lobsters courtesy of local lobsterman Mark Leach and UMASS Large Pelagic Research Center t-shirts.
To return the tag and claim the reward, contact PhD student Kara Dodge at 978-420-6096. The tag may also be returned to the Harwich Harbormaster's Office at Saquatucket Harbor in Harwichport.
