24-year-old killed in Yarmouth rollover Monday

YARMOUTH PORT - The 24-year-old driver of a Jeep Cherokee was killed when the vehicle rolled over during a police pursuit in the area of Union Street in Yarmouth Port.

At 10:30 a.m. Monday morning, Yarmouth police asked media to inform the public that a section of Union Street had been closed off to traffic following a "serious crash". Police declined to offer any further details at that time.

A Dennis man, identified as Michael Francis Florio, was killed in the crash, according to a Yarmouth police release. Police were reportedly pursuing Florio after he was believed to have broken into a home a Winsome Road home in South Yarmouth.

Officers were dispatched to Winsome Road around 9:42 a.m. Monday morning. There, they saw Florio flee the home on foot, get into the Cherokee and drive away in what police described as a "dangerous and erratic manner." Florio nearly struck a police officers attempting to flee, police said.

Officers pursued Florio, often at a high rate of speed, into Yarmouth Port where he his car rolled over after striking an oncoming vehicle on Union Street, police said. Florio was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The driver of the other vehicle was unharmed. 

Police closed a portion of Union Street for several hours as State Police investigated the crash scene.
