Bourne school superintendent issues statement on migrant children

Lamarche ensures open lines of communication as governor offers up Joint Base Cape Cod

Editor's note: Bourne School Superintendent Steven Lamarche issued the following statement to parents Friday after Governor Deval Patrick's announcement that Joint Base Cape Cod is one of two Massachusetts military bases open to accept the children at the US border.

I am confident that you have heard that Joint Base Cape Cod has been identified as one of two possible sites to assist the federal government and their effort to shelter children, ages 3 to 17, who are stranded on the southern borders of the United States. Westover Air Base in Chicopee was also identified.

Attached you will find Q & A sheets publicly available on the www.mass.gov website. I want to call your attention to the following details:

  1. The United States Department of Health and Human Services will select the site
  2. Only one site will be chosen for Massachusetts
  3. Up-to 1,000 children will be brought to the chosen site
  4. The chosen site will be under federal government control
  5. The site will be secured and all encompassing, e.g. providing shelter, food and other services including education

In addition, with respect to this development, our community leaders have had open lines of communication and engaged with state leaders in the following manner:

  • Tom Guerino is communicating with Pam Kocher, Policy Director for Governor Patrick
  • Chris Hyldburg is communicating with David Vieira, Massachusetts State Representative
  • Steven Lamarche is communicating with Matthew Malone, MA Secretary of Education

Collectively we are paying very close attention to these developments and have ensured open lines of communication throughout.

We are all committed to the community of Bourne and will work with the state and federal government to mitigate the impact and disruption to the community in the event that Joint Base Cape Cod is selected

Lastly, if Joint Base Cape Cod is selected I am confident that we will do what we can to support these children.

Respectfully,

Steven M. Lamarche
