National Grid will be hosting two open houses this month on January 20 and 28. The open houses are open to residents of Yarmouth, Dennis, Brewster and Harwich who want to learn about the utility's upcoming Mid Cape Main Replacement project.
As part of the project, 18 miles of natural gas distribution main will be replaced. The project is currently in the engineering and design phase. The actual work is expected to begin in April 2017 and be completed in early 2019, according to the National Grid website. The utility decided to replace the mains following inspections in 2014 when it was determined that the current infrastructure may be stressed while operating under high pressure. The pressure throughout the on-Cape system was lowered necessitating the moratorium, according to National Grid.
The first of the two open houses will be on Wednesday, January 20 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Harwich Community Center, 100 Oak Street in Harwich. The second open house will be on Thursday, January 28 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Nathaniel Wixon Middle School, 901 Route 134 in South Dennis.
In December, National Grid representatives were sent into Yarmouth and Dennis neighborhoods to share information about the project with residents.
When the project begins, work will start in Yarmouth and travel into Dennis, Brewster and Harwich. A map of the work route is available here. Until the work is complete, there is a moratorium on new and expanded service in Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Chatham, Orleans and Eastham. Information about the current moratorium is available on the National Grid website here.
