Why are flags lowered today? May 4, 2017

In honor of SSG Michael J. Mantenuto, HHC of Holliston

From the Governor's Office:

Please be advised that Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker has ordered that the United States flag and the Commonwealth flag be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings from sunrise until sunset on the date of his interment, Thursday, May 4, 2017, in honor of SSG Michael J. Mantenuto, HHC- 1st Special Forces Group - Fort Lewis, WA, of Holliston, Massachusetts.

This gubernatorial order applies to:

1.  The main or administration building of each public institution of the Commonwealth, e.g. town and city halls

2.  Other state-owned or state-controlled buildings

3.  All state military installations

Mantenuto was famous for his depiction of Olympic hockey player Jack O’Callahan in the 2004 Disney film “Miracle.” Mantenuto left the world of acting and joined the US Army entering the ranks of the 1st Special Forces Unit (Airborne) in 2013.
Mantenuto was a Green Beret with the 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) and deployed in 2016 as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, a multi-national campaign against ISIS in Iraq and Syria.
