Jose Carneiro and Sharon Hawkins now on board

WE CAN, the organization dedicated to empowering Cape Cod women to achieve lasting positive change for themselves and their families, today announced the addition of two new board members who will help contribute to the vision and strategic  growth of WE CAN.  Board President, Pam Kukla welcomed José Carneiro and made known the return of former board president, Sharon Hawkins to the WE CAN Board 2018.

“We are thrilled to have Jose Carneiro bring his special talents and experience to WE CAN’s board, and we welcome Sharon Hawkins back to the board. Both will be instrumental in ensuring that WE CAN continues to provide the unique services that empower all Cape women to achieve lasting, positive change for themselves and their families,” said Pam Kukla.

José Carneiro has enjoyed a long career in the area of health care management and international health.  Carneiro was born and raised in Brazil.  He earned his doctorate and worked as an independent consultant providing technical assistance to many international health organizations in over 39 countries.  José then settled in Bethesda, Maryland when he accepted the position of Director at the Office of Minority Health Resource Center, US/DHHS with the mission of providing health education and training to women and minorities.   He has retired to Cape Cod.

On his appointment Carneiro said, "My seventeen years of work for the US government, as the Director of the Office of Minority Health Services/Resource Center, dovetailed perfectly well with the philosophy of this great organization.  I am very excited and grateful to be working with a very talented Board on behalf of women and minorities across Cape Cod."

Sharon Hawkins is the owner of South Street Beautification Trust, a private real estate company, the retired Senior Vice President of Dowling and O’Neil Insurance Agency, Hyannis and former co-owner of The Optimist Café in Yarmouthport.   Hawkins exemplifies commitment to volunteerism as she is currently Board Chair - Cape Cod Charitable FunRaisers and Board Member for Cape Cod Child Development and Bluecoats of Barnstable.  Past Board Chairmanships include WE CAN, American Red Cross Cape &Islands, and Greater Hyannis Chamber of Commerce.

On rejoining the WE CAN Board Hawkins commented, “WE CAN provides a woman with the tools and guidance to achieve self-sufficiency and to reach her goals. I am excited – and honored – to return to WE CAN’s board and contribute to that process.”

WE CAN has an active Board of Directors, consisting of 15 individuals whose diverse talents, connections, and enthusiasm complement each other and bring depth to the organization.  This committed Board of Directors provides strategic direction, long-term planning and high-level decision-making for WE CAN.
