Sandwich - The Hundred Acre School at Heritage, an innovative preschool focused on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) education, is now enrolling children for their first Kindergarten class. Children age 5 on September 1, 2019 can apply for the 2019-20 fall school year. The Hundred Acre School will continue to enroll students in their popular preschool program which engages children who are at least age 4 on September 1, 2019. On Thursday, January 17 from 10-11am, the school will hold its monthly Third Thursday Tour that includes an informational visit and tour with the Director of The Hundred Acre School, Melissa Russell.

Now entering its sixth year, The Hundred Acre School engages preschoolers and Kindergarten students in active learning and preparation for better success in school through classroom learning, exploration of Heritage’s 100 acres of nature trails and woodlands, and interactive activities with Heritage’s collections, facilities, and gardens. The school’s mission is to teach the whole child, using children’s natural curiosity and ease at learning through play, while emphasizing STEM as a springboard to multidisciplinary learning.

Since its opening, all preschool graduates of The Hundred Acre School have scored higher than the national average in six key domains: mathematics, cognition, literacy, language, socio-emotional, and physical. The school’s Kindergarten and preschool curriculum focuses on teaching and learning activities through a STEM lens, with indoor and outdoor learning environments carefully designed to promote STEM explorations and to support and enhance the curriculum.

The curriculum at The Hundred Acre School covers all objectives outlined by the standards for Massachusetts Preschool Learning Experiences developed by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care and the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for Kindergarten developed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.  The curriculum is also aligned to a standardized assessment tool call Teaching Strategies GOLD™. With its innovative, educational, and creative curriculum, The Hundred Acre School prepares its young learners for greater success in the classroom and helps foster a lifelong love of learning.
