Housing Assistance Corporation is seeking recipients for its 10th Annual Big Fix-a-Thon which is coming to Barnstable on Saturday, October 5.
As part of the annual fundraising day of service, volunteers make small repairs to homes owned by income-eligible seniors, veterans, and disabled residents in one town on Cape Cod. This year, the event will be supporting residents in Hyannis and Centerville with free assistance for home projects such as window, roofing or siding repairs; replacement of light fixtures or doors; yard clean-ups; and more.
Housing Assistance CEO Alisa Magnotta Galazzi said the Big Fix-a-Thon, “really does transform a home. It makes it so people can stay housed and age in place which is a critical component of our mission.”
In order to apply, residents must either be a veteran, senior, or disabled homeowner in Hyannis or Centerville. The home must serve as their primary residence. Big Fix-a-Thon recipients will be selected based upon need and the ability of volunteers to complete tasks within a roughly three-hour window.
The deadline to apply is Friday, June 14. Applications are currently available at Housing Assistance’s website, www.haconcapecod.org. Hard copies of the application can be picked up at the following locations: Barnstable Town Hall at 367 Main Street, Hyannis; Greater Hyannis Chamber of Commerce at 356 South Street; Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce at 5 Patti Page Way, Centerville; Barnstable Senior Center at 825 Falmouth Road, Hyannis; Hyannis Public Library at 401 Main Street; Centerville Public Library at 585 Main Street; Veterans Services Department at 66 Falmouth Road, Hyannis; and Elder Services of Cape Cod & the Islands at 68 Route 134, South Dennis.
Recipients will be notified they have been chosen for the event during the summer.
The Big Fix-a-Thon started in 2010 in Barnstable. Since that time, it has helped 124 homeowners in nine Cape Cod towns with a variety of small home repair projects. Both fundraising and volunteer applications will open on June 1.
Businesses interested in sponsoring this year’s Big Fix-a-Thon should contact Housing Assistance Event and Resource Development Coordinator Deanna Bussiere at [email protected] or 508-771-5400, ext. 273.
