State Rep. and US Marine Corps Veteran Tim Whelan reports on progress at the Korean War Memorial at the Route 6 Barnstable rest area:

Over the past few years our local Korean War Veterans have been looking for help with the maintenance of the Korean War Memorial located in the Route 6 Barnstable Rest Area.  Local members Joe Fallon of Yarmouth Port and Larry Cole of Harwich reached out over the past year to the Corporal Nicholas G. Xiarhos Young Marines Detachment, under the command of George Challies, for help.

Working with Representative Whelan’s office, some mechanical issues with the flagpoles were repaired and the NGX Young Marines gave a full day of service to clean out the beds, trim the bushes, and spread fresh mulch (which was donated by Home Depot in Hyannis).

More work will be done in the future to help make sure this fitting memorial to our brave troops who served bravely in the “Forgotten War” in Korea is properly maintained and showcases our community’s commitment to remember the service and sacrifice of our Korean War Veterans.
