New overnight: Wellfleet man arrested after high speed chase
HARWICH - A Wellfleet man was arrested early Wednesday morning after allegedly leading police on a high speed chase on Route 6 eastbound. Police say 23-year-old Dustin Curley was driving a red Chevy Camaro when he allegedly began accelerating after an officer attempted to pull him over near the Dennis-Harwich line. A high speed chase ensued and according to police, Curley's vehicle reached speeds of up to 140 MPH. After getting off at Exit 9 in Dennis, Curley eventually pulled over on Depot Street in Harwich and was taken into custody. He was charged with driving to endanger, failing to stop for police, marked lanes violation and speeding. He was due to be arraigned in Orleans District Court Wednesday morning.

Daytripper traffic gridlocked by crash
Two vehicles collided head-on on Rt. 6 in Eastham injuring 4 people, 2 seriously.
EASTHAM - (Video included) Four people were injured, two critically Tuesday afternoon in a Route 6 crash shortly before 3 p.m. The crash involved two vehicles, a white Chrysler Town & Country minivan driven by 87-year old Robert Caddell of Orleans and a black Nissan 300ZX driven by 19-year old Jamie Rees of Orleans. Caddell was ejected upon impact. Rees had to be freed using the Jaws of Life. Both were rushed to Cape Cod Hospital after Medflight was not available. Rees was later transfered to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Caddell later transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital both in critical condition. Caddell's wife 80-year old Grace Caddell was admited to Cape Cod Hospital. A second passenger in the van, an 81-year old South Orleans woman, was treated and released.
The crash occurred by Governor Prence Road on Route 6 near the Eastham Tourist Information Booth. Eastham Police re-routed traffic to Bridge Road. Traffic was still tied up at 4:45 p.m for several miles. A regional crash reconstruction team is trying to determine the cause of the crash.

Bicyclist struck by car in South Dennis
A young Russian woman luckily escaped with only minor injuries after her bike was struck by a car.
SOUTH DENNIS - A young Russian woman was lucky to have escaped with only bumps and bruises when her bicycle was struck by a car at the intersection of Baxter Street and Upper County Road in South Dennis around 10:50 p.m. Tuesday. The intersection where the collision occurred is unlit and the driver of the Toyota Camry making a left on Upper County from Baxter apparently did not see the bicycle and rider headed east toward Dennisport. Dennis rescue responded to the scene but the young woman (seen at right talking with police) refused treatment and transport to the hospital. Dennis police gave her a ride home.

Firefighters douse basement fire in Falmouth
FALMOUTH - Falmouth firefighters were able to quickly douse a fire in the basement of a Rosemary Lane home shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday. Smoke was reportedly pouring out of the front door when firefighters arrived. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

A car hit a fence and tree in Dennis leaving it dangling at a sharp angle
SOUTH DENNIS - A young woman traveling alone lost control of her Dodge Stratus as she was headed west on Upper County Road in South Dennis near Aunt Debby's Road. The vehicle crossed the centerline and hit a stockade fence, a utility pole guy wire - narrowly missing the pole itself -- and a large pine tree. Several sections of the fence were demolished and shattered boards were scattered across the yard of a nearby house. The absence of skid marks on the road or grass shoulder indicated that the driver probably did not apply the brakes at anytime before the impact. The driver was up and walking around after the crash but appeared to be in pain and was subsequently transported to Cape Cod Hospital by Dennis paramedics.

Van vs. pole in Barnstable
A woman was taken to CCH with unknown injuries after this crash on Route 6A in Barnstable.
BARNSTABLE - At 11:45 a.m. Tuesday Barnstable Police and Fire responded to a single vehicle crash with injuries on Route 6A at Braggs Lane in Barnstable. A Mazda minivan struck a pole on the driver's side and wound up on the side of the road with its front wheel ripped off. Rescuers had to take the female driver, the sole occupant, out of the passenger's side because the driver's side was destroyed. She was taken to Cape Cod Hospital with unknown injuries.

Car vs. pedestrian under investigation in Sandwich
SANDWICH - Sandwich Police continue to investigate a car vs. pedestrian crash Sunday night. 39-year-old Rory Quintanilla of Richfield Springs, NY was walking on Ploughed Neck Road when he was struck by a car driven by 17-year-old Robert O. Savoy of Forestdale. Quintanilla remains in Cape Cod Hospital in stable condition. Savoy's car veered across the road and struck a tree. Both Savoy and his passenger, 17-year-old Michael Clancy, were treated and released at Cape Cod Hospital.
Police seek vehicle that allegedly struck pedestrian
HYANNIS - At 2:15 p.m. Tuesday Barnstable Police and Hyannis Fire responded to Cromwell Court at 168 Barnstable Road. A man reportedly limped into the manager's office and told them he had been struck by a car on Barnstable Road and that the driver of the vehicle had fled the scene. Hyannis rescuers packaged the man and took him to Cape Cod Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening. Police issued an all points bulletin for a 4-door gray Mazda sedan wanted in connection with the reported hit & run.

Woman criticaly injured after car hits house
EASTHAM - A local woman was critically injured after losing control of her car and hitting a house. It happened around 2 p.m. Monday at 85 Silver Spring Beach Road. 62-year-old Charlotte O'Connor was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital. Officials are investigating the cause of the crash. The home should be repairable. Further details were not immediately available.
Surfers paradise but swimmers beware as tropical storm passes by
CAPE COD - Tropical Storm Cristobal will pass out to sea Tuesday. Building waves along ocean beaches will likely mean great surfing. However, swimmers are warned of the potential for enhanced rip currents and to swim only at lifeguard protected beaches. If you get caught in a rip swim parallel to the coast until you get out of it and then work your way in towards the shore. There should be little evidence of the storm's passing on land.
Brewster sailor rescued
BREWSTER - A woman sailing on a small craft needed help getting back in after strong southwest winds carried her out into Cape Cod Bay Monday afternoon. Marianne Lieberman of Bechtelsville, PA was able to tie off to a buoy until Brewster firefighters could reach her with a boat and tow her in. She was cold but uninjured.
Route 6 crash in Provincetown
PROVINCETOWN - A car went out of control and crashed into the median along the sand dunes on Route 6 at the entrance to Provincetown Monday morning. The windshield was shattered by a low hanging branch. The driver was treated and released at the scene. Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

Man injured, arrested after Cotuit incident

COTUIT - Police are sorting out a bizarre incident in Cotuit Sunday afternoon. Officers were called to a Popponessett Road home after reports someone had broken in looking for a boat that was supposed to be for sale. He reportedly left but returned possibly to try to steal some liquor. The homeowner then reportedly fought him off, nicking him with a knife. The wounded suspect was apparently found a short time later at his home on Bayberry Lane behind the Popponessett Road home. 52-year-old James Lukas of Cotuit was treated by EMTs and then arrested for breaking and entering and outstanding warrants.

Crash stalls Route 132 traffic
HYANNIS - A crash on Route 132 in front of the Cape Cod Mall around 2 p.m. Sunday caused major delays along the road. Reports say several people including some children were taken to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation but none of the injuries appeared serious. Barnstable Police are investigating.
Power surge in Harwichport
HARWICH - Firefighters had to go door to door in one Harwichport neighborhood after an electrical surge. A power box apparently started smoking causing the surge on Old Harbor Road. The area is fed through underground cables. Crews told homeowners to shut off their main breakers as a precaution and used thermal cameras to check for any fires. NSTAR crews were called to fix the problem.

Toddler survives fall from second floor window
OSTERVILLE - A 4-year-old girl was very lucky after falling out of a small second story window in her Osterville home.
Rescuers rushed to the Parker Road location shortly before noon and were relieved to find the little girl had landed in some bushes which likely softened the blow.
She was taken to Cape Cod Hospital as a precaution and is expected to be fine.

Man charged with trafficking in heroin
HYANNIS - Barnstable Police investigating a possible car break arrested a man for trafficking heroin. Sgt. Michael Clark stopped a vehicle for questioning and reportedly observed 29-year-old David Silva of Mashpee toss a bag out of the car. The bag contained 70 bags of heroin weighing about 22 grams.
Three teens charged in school break
SANDWICH - Three teens were charged after allegedly breaking into the Henry T. Wing School in Sandwich early Sunday morning. Police responding to an alarm spotted the three who jumped into a car and fled. After a short chase, police stopped the vehicle on Service Road. Conor Carroll and Daniel Farrington, both 17 of Sandwich, along with a 15-year-old juvenile were charged with breaking and entering. Carroll was also charged with assault with a dangerous weapon after allegedly almost hitting officers while trying to escape. There was no damage at the school.
Dump truck destroyed by fire
CHATHAM - A dump truck was destroyed by an early morning fire in Chatham. Crews responded to the Commerce Park development around 4:30 a.m. and found the truck fully involved. The fire was contained to the truck. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Harwich breaks ground on new police station
Town officials and building committee members break ground on the new Harwich Police Station.
HARWICH - A ground breaking ceremony was held Sunday for the new Police Public Safety Facility that will be built next to Fire Headquarters on Sisson Road.
Police Chaplain Rev. Jim David (right) gave the invocation and his blessings.
Town officials and building committee members then turned the soil over in the ceremonial ground breaking.
Afterward, a jail house BBQ was held and a dunk tank proved very popular. Below Sgt. Kevin Considine takes the plunge for the department.

Teen pedestrian killed in Hyannis; Bourne, Harwich rollovers; Centerville crash; Person injured by bull at fair; Biker struck;
Teen pedestrian struck, killed in Hyannis
A pedestrian was killed after being struck by this Lexus on Route 28 in Hyannis.
HYANNIS - Tragedy in Hyannis as a 16-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed on Route 28 around 11 p.m. Saturday evening.
A Centerville ambulance on the way to Cape Cod Hospital came up on the scene by Blanchard's Liquors near the rear entrance to the Cape Cod Mall.
The Centerville crew rendered emergency aid until a Hyannis ambulance arrived and rushed Crystal Manchuk of Centerville to Cape Cod Hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later.
The driver of the Lexus SUV, 38-year-old Paula Lemos of Marstons Mills, stayed at the scene. The vehicle's hood was visibly dented from the impact.
Barnstable Police were on scene doing reconstruction to determine the cause of the collision.
According to reports from the driver and other witnesses, Manchuk, who was leaving work at the McDonald's in the mall, apparently ran into the roadway and Lemos could not stop in time. No charges have been filed against Lemos.

Two injured in Bourne rollover
BOURNE - Two people were injured in a rollover crash in Bourne Saturday evening. The crash happened on Route 28 northbound near Clay Pond Road around 10 p.m. Bourne Police are investigating. Further details were not immediately available.
Driver cited after rolling pickup truck in Harwich
HARWICH - Saturday around 8 p.m. a male rolled his Chevrolet pick-up at the corner of Azalea Drive and Blueberry Lane. Harwich police issued a citation to the young driver for operating without a license and driving to endanger when backing up. No injuries were reported.

Two car crash in Centerville
CENTERVILLE - At 1:45 p.m. Saturday Centerville Fire and Barnstable Police responded to a 2-car crash with injuries in the area of 410 Main Street. One person was taken to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation. Heavy traffic was rerouted for about 45 minutes until the wreckage was cleared. Police are investigating.

Man injured by bull at county fair
FALMOUTH - A man was injured by a bull at the bull riding rodeo that is part of the Barnstable County Fair Saturday afternoon. The victim was taken to Cape Cod Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Further details were not immediately available.

CENTERVILLE - A bicyclist was struck Saturday afternoon at the intersection of Route 28 and West Main Street. The victim was taken to Cape Cod Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Barnstable Police are investigating.

BOURNE - Bourne Police are investigating a reported robbery at the Sorenti's gas station by the Sagamore Bridge early Saturday morning. A man apparently tried to grab money from the register but was fended off by the clerk. We'll bring you further details as we get them from Bourne Police.
Storms bring vivid lightning, torrential downpours
CAPE COD - A line of strong thunderstorms moved across the Cape during the late evening hours. Area firefighters were kept busy checking numerous reports of activated alarms and possible lightning strikes. Scattered power outages were reported in various area including West Barnstable. Torrential downpours slowed traffic to a crawl for a time. No significant damage or injuries were reported.
Apparent drowning victim dies in Truro
TRURO - A man was pulled from the waters at Pond Village Beach shortly before 5 p.m. after apparently nearly drowning. Rescuers were still performing CPR as the victim was brought to the parking lot of the beach known by locals as Cold Storage Beach. Despite resuscitation efforts 77-year old Louis Karnakis succumbed and was pronounced dead. The water was shallow and relatively calm and officials will be trying to determine if Karnakis may have had a medical condition that caused him to get into trouble in the water.

Worker injured in fall at Harwich construction site
Rescuers carry a construction worker who fell at a job site in Harwich.
WEST HARWICH - A builder fell from the second floor of a construction site on Driftwood Terrace Friday around 1 p.m.
The man who reportedly suffered a seizure causing hime to fall was taken to Cape Cod Hospital with unknown injuries.

Motorcycle crashes into marsh
A motorcycle crashed into a marsh off Craigville Beach Road early Friday afternoon.
CENTERVILLE - A motorcyclist apparently lost control of his cycle about 1:30 p.m. on Craigville Beach Road. The bike ran off the road into a marshy area. The driver (right) had some minor injuries but declined to go to the hospital. Fire officials worked to make sure no fuel spilled in the marsh. Barnstable Police are investigating the crash.

Another tagging arrest in Provincetown
PROVINCETOWN -On Thursday Provincetown Police arrested 22-year old Robert L. Diaz III of North Truro and charged him with MGL Ch266/Sec126a Defacement of real or personal property and MGL Ch266/Sec126b Tagging. This arrest was part on the ongoing investigation into the numerous incidents of "Tagging" of public and private property. The investigation will continue and more arrests are expected. Sources tell CWN Diaz may have been caught in the act by surveillance video.
Citizens are urged to contact the Police Department immediately at (508) 487-1212 should they observe any activity they think may be connected to graffiti.
Falmouth Police continue noise abatement efforts
FALMOUTH - On Sunday Falmouth Police will conduct continuing noise abatement enforcement along the scenic shore route extending from East Falmouth through Falmouth Heights and ending in the Woods Hole area.
The campaign will focus on loud, offensive, and illegal noise created by motor vehicles and motorcycles. Noise of the type is generally created by a defective exhaust system, altered exhaust system, non-existent exhaust system and unnecessarily loud radios or sound systems. All of these acts are in violation of Massachusetts General Law (Ch 90-16) or the Town of Falmouth Code (Ch 150) both of which carry a $50 fine.
The vast majority of the violations were brought to the police department's attention by a group of local residents that have named themselves the Quiet Roads Association. Since the inception of the partnership between the Quiet Roads Association and the Falmouth Police Department numerous noise abatement patrols have been deployed resulting in a number of motor vehicle and motorcycle operators being stopped due to excessive noise.
The Falmouth Police Department will continue to conduct these initiatives throughout the summer in an effort to reduce the number of noise complaints along with the disruption to the community that is normally included with these quality of life violations.
Two-vehicle crash on Route 28 in Yarmouth
A two-vehicle rear-end crash on Route 28 by the Cavalier Motel caused major traffic backups.
YARMOUTH - Traffic along Route 28 in Yarmouth was delayed Friday morning
after a two-vehicle crash in front of the Cavalier Motel. A Honda sedan
apparently rear-ended a Honda Pilot. The drivers of both vehicles were taken to Cape
Cod Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening after the 6:45 a.m.
crash. Yarmouth Police are investigating reports that the Honda sedan was
operating erratically prior to the crash.

Overnight: Guests escape Yarmouth motel fire
Smoke billows from the Brentwood Motor Inn after a fire broke out early Friday morning.
YARMOUTH - Scary moments but tragedy adverted for guests at a Yarmouth motel after a fire of undetermined origin breaks out.
Firefighters responding to an alarm at the Brentwood Motor Inn at 960 Route 28 around 3:20 a.m. Friday encountered heavy smoke.
CWN's Richard Copley says a guest banged on several doors to get other guests out and officials were able to evacuate the rest safely. No injuries were reported.
Crews
discovered a fire on the outside of the building near the pool which
was quickly knocked down but thick smoke permeated parts of the motel.
Route 28 was closed for a time by the Pancake Man due to hose lines
running across the road but was open in time for the morning commute. The State Fire Marshal's
office along with Yarmouth Police are investigating the cause of the
fire. We'll bring you further details as we get them from Yarmouth
officials.

Toddler burned in Barnstable
BARNSTABLE - A toddler suffered burns on her feet reportedly from a bonfire at a beach on Barnstable Harbor Thursday evening sometime around 9 p.m. The 4-year-old victim was taken to Barnstable Municipal Airport and flown to the Shriners Burn Center in Boston as a precaution.
Power problems in Falmouth
FALMOUTH - Power problems affected two areas of Falmouth Thursday. The Woods Hole and Sippewisset areas went dark around 5 p.m. Thursday. Service was restored in about an hour but that in turn may have caused parts of Teaticket and downtown Falmouth to go out. That problem was not resolved for several hours.
Drug bust in Dennis
DENNIS - Dennis Police assisted by a regional special operation team in raiding a residence at 240 Airline Road Thursday morning. 27-year-old David S. Gonsalves was arrested on charges of possession of class A (heroin), possession with intent to distribute heroin, and possession of class C. He was arraigned Thursday in Orleans District Court. CWN archives show Gonsalves has been in trouble several times in the past including a June 10th, 2007 drug and weapons bust in Yarmouth, A September 2007 drug bust in Yarmouth and a November 2007 traffic stop in Barnstable where he was a passenger arrested on drug charges.

Mashpee missing son found safe
MASHPEE - A Mashpee father had reported his son missing to police. 26-year-old Damien Fernandes was scheduled to arrive in Boston last Thursday on a Greyhound bus from a visit to an aunt in Oakland, CA. but has now been located safe-but in jail. It turns out Fernandes was in jail in Florida after being pickup up on Kansas City on an outstanding warrant of a two year old concealed weapon charge.
Gas main struck in Harwich
An NStar crew struck a gas main in Harwich Thursday morning.
HARWICH - Around 10 a.m. Thursday an NStar crew digging at Azalea Drive and Bittersweet Lane struck and ruptured a gas main.
Harwich Police cordoned off the area streets and some homes were evacuated.

Dodge Durango had struck a bicyclist. The bike rider was rushed to Cape
Cod Hospital with unknown injuries. Barnstable Police are investigating.

Teens accused in golf course attack
FALMOUTH - Three teens are being sought after allegedly trying to slash a man on a Falmouth Golf course late Monday night. A 20-year-old man reportedly told police the teens shined a flashlight in his face at the Woods Hole Golf Club. Sometime later, as the victim was headed home, the teens reportedly followed him and one tried to cut him with a knife but only cut his shirt. Falmouth Police say they have no suspects at this time. This incident comes in the wake of the July 4th attack by a Falmouth teen on a presumed Yankee fan, and the pushing of an elderly man fishing off a pier into the water by another group of local boys.

EASTHAM - A van rolled over at the Orleans/Eastham rotary on Route 6 shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday. According to reports, the driver had fled the scene prior to the arrival of officials. One person was taken to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation. Police continue to investigate the crash. Further details were not immediately available.
Two injured in Wellfleet head-on
WELLFLEET - Two people were taken to Cape Cod Hospital after two vehicles collided head-on on Route 6 in Wellfleet. The crash happened around 9 p.m. Wednesday near the Paine Hollow turn-off. Both injuries were described as not life-threatening. Four others were evaluated at the scene. The cause of the crash is under investigation by Wellfleet Police.
Two car crash sends one to Cape Cod Hospital; jams traffic
YARMOUTH -Around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday two cars collided at the lights on Willow Street at Higgins-Crowell Road in West Yarmouth.
One person was transported to Cape Cod Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening injuries.
Traffic was backed up almost to Route 6 for a time until the scene could be cleared.

CWN followup: Provincetown Police continue to investigate tagging vandalism
PROVINCETOWN - Provincetown Police continue to investigate a large number of incidents of graffiti vandalism known as tagging under Massachusetts General Laws.
Chapter 266 Section 126b of those laws, although a misdemeanor, provides for substantial fines and the suspension of the individual's drivers license for one year. If the individual is under the age of sixteen one year is added to their minimum age eligibility for driving.
The lead investigator in the tagging incidents for Provincetown Police, Officer Monica Himes, arrested Kevin Burke of Provincetown back in May charging him with tagging.
Since then numerous additional instances of graffiti have been reported and the investigation is continuing. As a result of the investigation three additional suspects will be charged with tagging. 17-year-old Caitlyn Dionne of Provincetown was arrested Tuesday on narcotic violations. She along with 20-year-old Stephen Wells and a juvenile who was not identified because of their age will all face tagging charges according to police.
Police are working with their Truro and Wellfleet counterparts to determine if tagging incidents in those towns may be related.
Citizens are urged to contact Provincetown Police at (508) 487-1212 immediately should they observe any activity they think may be connected to graffiti.

Department will hold a ground-breaking ceremony, Jail House B-B-Q and Annual
Property Auction to celebrate the start of construction for the new Harwich
Police Department - Fire Department Renovation project. The event runs from noon to 3 p.m. at the Harwich Police Department on Sisson Road. Parking available at the Harwich Middle School

Route 6 rollover in Bourne
BOURNE - One person was taken to Cape Cod Hospital after a rollover crash in Bourne. The crash happened just before 6 a.m. eastbound past exit 1. The driver 19-year old Samantha Sorensen suffered non-life threatening injuries. State Police are investigating.
Provincetown Police make arrest in tagging spree
PROVINCETOWN - CWN has learned Provincetown Police arrested a woman Tuesday morning reportedly in connection with the tagging that has been occurring around town. We're checking with Provincetown Police for further details and if there may be any connections with incidents in Truro and Wellfleet.
Woman injured in Provincetown breakwater fall
PROVINCETOWN - A leisurely sunset walk along the popular West End Breakwater in Provincetown ended abruptly when a woman apparently slipped and fell on the stone jetty that leads to Long Point. The woman did not fall in the water but did suffer facial trauma. She was taken to Hyannis by ambulance and was to be flown to a Boston hospital. Further details were not immediately available.

Three Route 28 crashes keep Barnstable Police busy
COTUIT - Three nearly simultaneous crashes on Route 28 in the Town of Barnstable had police hopping for awhile Tuesday afternoon. It started around 5 p.m. first with a rear-ender on Route 28 by the Centerville Plaza, then another crash at Route 28 and Osterville/West Barnstable Road. No one was injured in those crashes but a third crash on Route 28 at Stub Toe Road (pictured) involving three vehicles did send one person to Cape Cod Hospital with unknown injuries. Traffic was heavily backed up until the wreckage could be cleared. Police are investigating all three crashes.

Head-on crash stalls Scenic Highway traffic
BOURNE - A two-vehicle head-on crash closed down the Scenic Highway section of Route 6 during the morning commute. The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. near the Herring Run. Fortunately both drivers escaped serious injury. Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
Liquor theft leads to hit & run
HYANNIS - Police are seeking a suspect who allegedly swiped a bottle of Liquor at Luke's Liquors on Barnstable Road Monday afternoon. The man wearing a jacket and Celtic's hat was chased by an employee. The suspect dropped the bottle across the street and ran into Hinckley Road. The employee told police a black Honda driven by a woman picked up the man and sped off hitting a parked car in the process.
Brewster Police and Fire to hold public safety day
BREWSTER - The Brewster Police and Fire Departments are sponsoring a public safety day this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Drummer Boy Park on Route 6A. Representatives from a variety of support agencies including the U.S. Coast Guard with a helicopter, the Cape Cod Regional SWAT and Accident Reconstruction teams, Mass Environmental Police, Barnstable County Sheriff's K9, Cape & Islands Red Cross; the Mass Emergency Management mobile command post and others will be on hand. Yarmouth Police wind up support our troops campaign
YARMOUTH - The special collection drive by Yarmouth Police for local Marines fighting overseas will culminate this Saturday, July 19th at Yarmouth Police Headquarters. The special guest of honor will be Christian Haerter of Sag Harbor, New York-the Gold Star father of fallen United States Marine Lance Corporal Jordan Haerter. Lance Corporal Haerter was a First Battalion Ninth Marine Regiment Weapons Company platoon mate of Lance Corporal Nicholas G. Xiarhos and was killed in combat protecting his fellow Marines and Iraqi citizens on April 22, 2008 in Ramadi. All members of the public are invited to drop off items and meet Mr. Haerter anytime between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
Body found in Mashpee; Bike path assaults in Brewster; Wellfleet tagging

MASHPEE - Police were called to the scene of a disturbing discovery in Mashpee early Monday morning. Photographer Frank Paparo reported that the bloodied body of a man was found in the rear parking lot of the Stop & Shop at the Mashpee Commons at 5:30 am. State Police detectives and
Mashpee PD cordoned off the area and investigtated the body & scene. The
body was removed after several hours of investigation. The victim was identified as 29-year old Kristofer Morrissey of Hyannis.
Foul play is apparently not suspected but no details further have been released by authorities. We are checking with Mashpee Police and the Cape & Islands District Attorney's office and will bring you further details as we get them.

Wellfleet Police investigating spray paint vandalism
WELLFLEET - Wellfleet Police are investigating three cases of spray paint vandalism to houses in their towns late last week. The houses are on Holbrook Avenue including the iconic Morning Glory octagon house (right). Images of flowers and mushrooms were scrawled. Police are looking for two males who were seen purchasing black and blue spray paint at the Mid-Cape Center shortly before the incidents occurred. They are both described as being about 5'8" tall. One had curly blond hair and the other had short sandy brown hair and was wearing Nike sneakers. Anyone with information is asked to contact Wellfleet Detective Jonathan Taylor at (508) 349-3702. Tagging in Provincetown is also the subject of an ongoing investigation by police in that town.

Brewster Police warn of bike path assaults
BREWSTER -On Sunday, officers from the Brewster Police Department investigated an assault that took place on the Cape Cod Rail Trail bike path.
The incident took place at approximately 11:30 a.m. when a female jogging on the bike path was accosted by three young men in their late teens.
The suspects were on bicycles and peddled up on the victim from behind. As they passed her, the suspects struck the victim on the buttocks and chest with their hands.
This is the third incident of this type in the past two months to be reported on the bike path. The cases may or may not be related and all are under investigation by the Brewster Police Department. The three incidents have taken place on the bike trail between Nickerson State Park and Underpass Road. All three victims were female joggers, who were alone at the time.

People using the bike path are encouraged to keep a cell phone with them, travel with a partner, when possible, and keep aware of your surroundings.

CCNS Employee Association sponsors blood drive
WELLFLEET - The Cape Cod National Seashore Employee Association will sponsor a blood drive this Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at park headquarters located in 99 Marconi Site Road in Wellfleet.
Donors can walk-in or call ahead to reserve an appointment. Advance appointments cah be made by calling Cape Cod Hospital at (508) 862-5273 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. up til the event.
The mission of the Employee Association at Cape Cod National Seashore is to foster the spirit of fellowship, while encouraging high morale among all employees and volunteers in the park. Association treasurer Rainie Brownell says the association came up with the idea for the blood drive which was enthusiastically supported by management.
The Cape Cod Hospital Blood Bank is always appreciative of people kind enough to donate blood. There is often a critical shortage and without donations they would be unable to serve patients who are in need of blood.

New overnight: Boat fire in Brewster
BREWSTER - Fire destroyed a boat in dry dock in Brewster early Monday morning. Firefighters were called to 12 Leland Road around 1 a.m. They were able to keep the flames from spreading to a nearby garage. No injuries were reported and the cause is unknown. Further details were not immediately available.
Fake hand grenade shown in Harwich robbery
A man was arrested after showing a hand grenade and demanding money at the White Hen Pantry.
WEST HARWICH - Around 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening a male subject walked into the White Hen Pantry on Route 28, and allegedly showed a hand grenade and demanded cash. Harwich and Dennis police were able to apprehended the suspect 51-year old Dennis Walsh of Harwich soon after, and he is seen in the back of a cruiser where Harwich Officer Paul Boorack placed him under arrest for armed robbery while masked, assault with intent to rob and assault with a dangerous weapon. The grenade turned out to be a fake and is shown on right in the hand of Harwich Officer Derek Dutra. We're checking with Harwich Police for further details.

Rising from the ashes
The new St. Peter the Apostle Church opened in Provincetown 3 1/2 years after the original church burned down.
PROVINCETOWN - The first official Sunday mass was held at the new St. Peter the Apostle Church in Provincetown. The old landmark church burned in January 2005 two days after a massive blizzard. An electrical problem was believed responsible. A special mass was held in the church as part of the Blessing of the Fleet two weeks ago.

Alarm system credited with saving Orleans house
ORLEANS - Fire officials say an automatic alarm gave them the head start they needed to save an Orleans house that caught fire Saturday. Crews were called to the house on Weston Taylor Drive and discovered a fire on the second floor. A second alarm brought in Brewster and Eastham to assist. No injuries were reported and the cause was not immediately known.
