What makes a lobster roll a super delicious experience ? It all starts with a basic ingredient the roll, it has to be a fresh hot dog roll toasted or a brioche bun soft and sweet to envelop the fresh seafood tastes. The lobster has to be a mix of tail, claw and knuckles for each contributes to that mouth bite blend that indeed engulfs that truly fresh ocean flavor of lobster. Some people have to lay down a bed of lettuce first between the lobster and roll to keep the roll from getting soggy and create a cripsness to that first bite. What you choose to add to the lobster is your choice but if you add some mayo add the one with best flavor to enhance that fresh ocean flavor and a little bit of celery is just right. Everyone has their favorite spots and polls have been taken to find the best and the top ten were posted on line.Some purists, especially folks from Connecticut perfer theirs on a toasted hot dog roll with a little lemon, butter, salt and pepper. On Cape you can get the purist at Arnold's Lobsterand Clam Bar in Eastham on Rte 6 and JT's Seafood in Brewster. The Yankee Magazine boosts of the best places to get a Lobster roll on Cape Cod but there are so many more great spots.For me my favorite over the top is at the Raw Bar in Mashpee at the Popponeset Marketplace filled with enough Lobster for two meals. All around Cape Cod there are great food stops with great Lobster Rolls and if you find one, share your finds with us. I like my rolls with just the freshness of Lobster but have tried a sprinkle of ginger to be a great kick if you like ginger. If you are ever on the road in Maine then try Highroller Lobster Company because they have developed different flavored sauces so the customers can kick up their rolls with flavor. Cotuit gave us some great Cape Cod Baseball Memories with the Kettlers and a delicious find when I ventured off the beaten path to The Kettle Ho Restaurant and Tavern on 12 School Street in Cotuit. It was a beautiful warm summer day around 4pm when my friend Sue and I were looking for a restaurant that we had not yet tried. We arrived as they were just opening for the night, so the kitchen was busy as they were preparing for an evening of fresh delicious entrees. It's basically a tavern atmosphere with lots of locals and a friendly young waitstafff eager to make your dining experience a pleasant one. The menu is small with basic burgers and sandwiches including a grilled cheese.While the Land and Sea Entrees include Bbq Ribs, Seafood Platter, Shrimp Scampi, Baked Seafood and Baked Chicken just to name a few.We started our meal with a cup of Clam Chowder which was rich and flavorful with sweet bite size pieces of clams and a savory flavor. The Stuffed Quahog was flavorful with a seafood freshness and a not overly seasoned seafood bread stuffing. I tried the Baked Stuffed Sea Scallops which was perfectly cooked with a simple but flavorful bread crumb topping and freshed whipped creamy mashed potatoes and a side salad. Sue ordered the Baked Stuffed Seafood Casserole with delicious pieces of shrimp, sea scallops and fresh haddock with a side of rice pilaf and fresh steamed green beans. The cooking is simple Cape Cod cooking but detailed with fresh goosdness paired with a friendly staff. Its open year round and worth a trip.
On a brisk windy October day when route 28's landscape reminded me of Vermont in fall without the mountains but the added attraction of picturesque beaches, we stop off in Harwich to try The Lannyard Bar and Grill. The building has gone through some changes in the past few years from the 400 East to Land Ho and now with some of the old decor of Land Ho promises to blend the connection between community and a local pub where you can feel at home with comfort foods. Their luncheon menu offers burgers,sandwiches and a few taco choices and the after 5pm menu offers some tempting entrees.I was a little disappointed that there were not entrees available for lunch as one of my lunceon companions has been having a few problems with diet restrictions. The waitress was awesome and willing to help us as we navigated the menu options. We started out with a warm cup of creamy Clam Chowder that had a hint of amber glow to it,but maintain its savory clam goodness. My guess was that a little beer or wine had been added to the chowder which enhanced the flavor a bit. I decided to build my burger which was an 8oz Angus Beef Burger griddled and served on a toasted sesame seed bun with bacon and grilled mushrooms. The burger was cooked to perfection with enough mushrooms and bacon to make this girl a "happy camper". Naomi my Reuben expert ordered the Corned Beef Reuben with sauerkraut, Russian dressing, Swiss cheese on pumpernickel bread and was quite pleased with her choice. Now Sue my friend with some diet limitations was ready for the Lobster Sub but they had run out of it so she decided on the Fish Tacos with broiled fish instead of fried. It was served with a side of rice which was basic and not extraordinary. I think she would had prefered to have tried one of the entrees instead with diet limitations the menu was alittle difficult because of this. They have daily specials and a variety of club sandwiches as well as fried pickles. Thanks to Lanyard and your waitstaff !!

Nothing like a good crisp day at the beach and today we ventured off to Chapin's Beach in Dennis. It's somehow comforting watching the waves and listening to the peaceful sounds of nature. For me Cape Cod offers something very special in the fall, as I drive along route 6a I am blessed with the foliage that sings of life in new england, magestic beaches and specialty shops with true treasures for the eclectic collector. Our explorations lead to a hunger that was well satisfied at Chapin's Restaurant on 85 Taunton Avenue which is just off of route 6a in Dennis. The restaurant is spacious with a cozy modern Cape Cod Cottage influence and with just the proper acoustics to be able to converse with your dining companions. My friend Sue ordered her usual cup of Clam Chowder and was quite pleased with its savory creamy blend of pure new england goodness. As usual I tried a Baked Stuffed Quahog with their own specially prepared stuffing . It was a pure bread stuffing with a good fresh clam taste and just a little kick of spice from the linguica and a little tomato flavor to make it a stand out for me. I have been to Chapin's Restaurant on many occassions and they have never let me down. Sue ordered the Baked Seafood Combo which was prepared with two jumbo shrimp, broiled scallops and cod with seasoned bread crumbs. The presentation was every bit as good as the taste as we lost Sue for a few moments. My friend Naomi tried the Chicken, Broccoli & Penne which was sauteed chicken tenderloins tossed with garlic, broccoli, Romano cheese and penne pasta. Garnished with a fresh tomato basil blend. It was delicious and freshly prepared with just the right blend of flavors to make it a savory taste. I tried the Cape Mixed Grill which was a perfect medley of steak tips, jumbo shrimp, and salmon. Served with tavern sauce and wasabi cucumber sauces. It was beyond my expectations and the presentation did not do justice to the all theflavors in the dish. I was surprised by the wasabi cucumber as it was light with a predominate cucumber flavor and a little kick of wasabi. It was all delicious and the wait staff were awesome. If you have not been then you have to try Chapin's Restaurant and yes they do have a gluten free menu as well as some good mexican choices and great sandwiches. Long after the crowds have left there is still beauty and lots of savory stops to find on Cape Cod, and this adventure took me to Martha's Vineyard with my friend Sue, who grew up on the island. We rented a Jeep and decided to spend the day exploring all that this beautiful island has to offer and it takes more than just one day to fully enjoy it all, but we did our best. From one end of the island to the other, each town offered a special atmosphere and food offerings. Aquinnah with its fading clay cliffs but rich in history and forklore from the Wampanoag Tribe to the Gay Head Lighthouse was our first stop on our journey. Menemsha is a small fishing village in the town of Chilmark offers the sights and sounds of true island life. Edgartown once known as a whaling port and home of many a sailing captain, now sets the tone as the ultimate tourist destination with many specilaty gift shops and art galleries. It is here that we stumbled upon one of the best dining experiences at The Wharf Pub on 3 Main Street in Egartown. Their menu is expansive and sure to please all. I orderd the Stuffed Quahog which was simple in it's description but bursting with rich and savory flavors of clams, peppers and onions. It has now become one of my top five stuffed quahogs on Cape Cod. Their clam chowder is rich in flavor and creaminess. My friend Sue has become my swordfish expert, tried the Grilled Swordfish Sandwich which was freshly grilled and topped with an amazing aioli dressing. I decided to try the Roasted Chicken Panni which was chicken with genoa salami, roasted tomatoes, swiss cheese and sage mayonaise. It was truely the work of an artist as the flavors all blended together to create a truely delicious bite. It was the best of my island experience and it fueled us to move on to other destinations. I will be returning to the island again as Martha's Vineyard has lots to offer. Special Thanks to Mocha Mott's who makes a great brew!!! Fall is here but the flavors of Cape Cod go on and in most cases intensify. Most tourists have gone on to their life duties but the smart ones experience fall on Cape Cod without the long lines. Located near the pictursque ever changing Swan River in Dennisport you will find a cozy dining experience at Clancy's Restaurant and Tavern. With a menu that offers daily specials as well as some familar homestyle favorites you will find many choices to satisfy every family member and create an awesome dining experience. On a cloudy day in September, much like today we decided to stop by Clancy's and try some of their delicious food. I had to start with a Baked Stuffed Quahog, which was a pure presentation of bits of quahogs and well seasoned with good seafood flavor. My non seafood friend Naomi decided to change things up a bit and orderd the Shrimp Cocktail which presented with four jumbo shrimp and the traditional cocktail sauce. Sue my chowder expert decided to sample their Clam Chowder and was impressed with the savory creamy goodness. I was feeling a bit adventureous and ordered the French Onion Soup which promised a parmesan crouton and melted swiss cheese. The soup was savory and rich with flavor but I was a little disappointed with the bread topping as it appeared to be a cut roll topping rather than the crunchy parmesan crouton which I was so much looking forward to. Sue my swordfish expert ordered the Seasoned Swordfish with her choice of asparagus and rice which proved to be a bit hit and prompted her to announce that she would definitely return anytime. Naomi tried the Fried Scallop Plate with fries and coleslaw and also announced that she would gladly return anytime. I ordered the Liver and Onions which was grilled calves liver with caramelized onions and bacon,which gave you the option to order one or two pieces. I an a liver lover but like it better when someone else prepares it and Clancy's did an awesome job in presentation and flavor. What I really enjoy about Clancy's is their dessert choices are appealing, delicious and with great presentation. Naomi tried a mini New York Cheesecake with Raspberry Coulis and I enjoyed a taste of Autumn with Pumpkin Ice Cream. In all it was an extremely good dining experience with all the ingredients to make a memoriable culinary adventure. The staff was awesome and very attentive to the needs of every customer. For over 50 years Captain Scott's has been serving seafood favorites and mediterranean specilaities on Tupper Road in Sandwich with the ambience of a cozy Cape Cod bungalow and the occassional sounds of a Cape Cod Train as they make their way to the canal. It all serves as a pleasant reminder of just where you are dining and a comfortable feeling of being a traveler on a journey filled with new experiences. The owners of Captain Scott's make it affordable with Lunch and Dinner Specials that change daily. For a $14 an exploring diner can enjoy a choice of salad, entree and dessert with some great choices of Baked Stuffed Scrod, New England Meatloaf, Swordfish Tips over Rice, Greek Style Pork Chops, Greek Styled Chicken and Shrimp Scampi just to name a few. By the menu selections, a diner can tell that their specialty is Greek food and if you are adventerous you should try some of their Greek specilities. As you know I like trying new restaurants or places that I have not yet visited and it has left me with not just one favorite restaurant but many places I like to visit on my travels around Cape. Captain Scott's was a pleasant stop on our way to the canal and the menu gave us lots of choices for all food lovers as well as a good Gluten free Menu. We started with a cup of Clam Chowder for my seafood loving friend and I tried the Lobster Bisque which were both delicious and all that they had promised with a rich creamy flavorful seafood base. The Bisque had a light sherry flavor with nice bits of lobster and the chowder was rich in clams and potatoes. The salad that came with my friend Sue choice proved to be a garden fresh prelude to her Ocean Fresh Swordfish Tips served over a bed of rice with a light lemon dill sauce to enhance the overall flavor. I tried a Stuffed Quahog which in presentaion was awesome on a bed of lettuce with rings of hot peppers, cocktail sauce and warm butter but the flavor of the stuffing was dull as it had not, as I believe been infused by the broth of the clams. It was good but needed the kick of the clam broth to really make it come alive. I had the Baked Stuffed Shrimp and Scallops which were delicious and cooked to perfection with a creamy sherry based sauce but the stuffing was as dull as the stuffing from the quahog with no rich seafood flavor. My non seafood loving friend tried one of the daily specials which was an Eggplant Parmesan Sandwich which fries which she claims are the best on Cape Cod. She totally loved her sandwich and it was all it had promised and more. For the rare person who loves smelts I encourage you to come here as Captain Scott's really does extremely well with delicious fried seafood choices and offers a Smelt Plate. My friend orderer her's to go for a later dining experience. They have great choices like the Althena Sandwich which is Golden Fried Haddock Topped with Roasted Tomatoes, Spinach, and Melted Feta Cheese on Toasted Panini Bread and lots more dinner choices. The serve is friendly and the restaurant is cozy and comfortable. I will be visiting them again as I see there are lots of choices and I am looking forward to trying something Greek. I also look forward to trying their Seafood Chowder which includes Fresh Clams, Scrod, and Sole in a Creamy Mix of Lobster Bisque and Clam Chowder. Thanks Captain Scott !!

So many good restaurants here on Cape Cod and so little time to fully enjoy all of them. I often looked back at all my dining experiences good and bad and feel sorry for the weary summer travelers all trying to make their vacation experience a truly memoriable one filled with magnificent views, memories and delicious food. It is why I came to write this blog. It is my hope to help direct travelers and residence alike to find all the culinary diversity that we have out there. My visit on a hot August afternoon brought me to a Barnstable icon in the heart of the quaint shopping village on route 6a. The Dolphin Restaurant has been around for over 70 years with a charmed Cape Cod family tradition of food service which includes delicious food and quintessential New England appeal. We started our adventure with a Cup of New England Clam Chowder that was all that it had promised a cup of creamy delicious soup filled with fresh bites of clam and potato. I tried the soup of the day which was a Seafood Bisque which was rich in a tomato broth with small bits of shrimp. It was delicious but I am not a Tomato soup fan and it lacked the creamy sherry flavor to keep me enjoying it, but it was good. I am always looking for a good stuffef quahog and the menu offered a choice of one or two Barnstable Stuffed Quahogs that were as described a spicy blend of quahogs, onions and bacon. The bacon part appealed to me and was a most tasteful addition to a good savory stuffing but the mistake of the chef was topping it with a lemon flavored butter. I am a purest when it comes to my stuffed quahog and rarely add any butter at all. If the tasteful sauce had been added to the side, I would have appreciated it all the more as I found the sauce drowned out the savory goodness of the stuffing. My non seafood lover friend decided to try the Rueban Sandwich which consisted of lean corned beef with melted swiss, kraut, their russian dressing on rye with spicy french fries 9.99. My seafood loving friend decided on the Baked Scallops which were sea scallops topped with their lobster, portobello stuffing and citrus butter sauce 17.99. Both of them truely enjoyed their meal and declared that they would return for lunch or dinner. I decided on the Scallop and Shrimp Dijonnaise which was fresh seafood tossed with creamy Dijon sauce 15.99 served with my choice of mashed potates and steamed broccoli. It was delicious in a light creamy sauce which enhanced the flavor of the fresh scallops and shrimp that were cooked to perfection. All in all the Dolphin Restaurant is a great stop for lunch or dinner as their vast menu offers many choices. Going to The Red Cottage Restaurant on 36 Old Bass River Road in Dennis has always been nostalgic for me. It's not that I have old memories of going there with family but many people do. Many of the memories that I do have are fairly new and packed with wonderful flavors and foods. For me, it's like going back in time to the fifties and suddenly memories and flavors return to me as I feel like I am home and back at the dinner table with my family. The Red Cottage Reataurant has always been a favorite breakfast and lunch spot for me, but since June and until September 2 they have been serving the "Summertime Suppers" Wednesday thur Sunday from 5 to 8pm and the food is delicious. I started this visit with a cup of rich creamy Seafood Chowder that was ever so lovingly prepared with salmon, swordfish, haddock, shrimp, scallops and clams. Every spoonful brought pleasure to my tastebuds as each was filled with a new seafood experience and there wasn't room for crackers. I felt as if I had stopped by a local fisherman's home and he shared the bounty of his morning catch as each piece of seafood blended well to create a symphony of flavors. My only regret was that I had not ordered a bowl but I had other flavors to taste and I didn't know just where the meal would take me. Our cheerful waitress presented us with a Johnny Cake hot off the grill which was a pancake made of fine cornmeal which tasted ever so savory with a little maple syrup. It was like the New England equivalent of tortillas, a cornmeal flatbread that many settlers took along for their journeys. The next surprise was their signature salad which was a simple plate of salad greens tossed with a balsamic homemade dressing with a sprinkling of blue cheese goodness. Simple and good, just the kind of salad that Grandma would serve. I ordered the Seafood Alfedo which served in a rich Alfredo sauce and laced iwth tender pieces of lobster, shrimp, and scallops. It was served with toasted garlic bread and the taste was rich in seafood freshness. My friend decided on Char-grilled Sirloin Tips which were marinated in their own special sauce which had a hint of teriyaki flavor. It was cooked to perfection and tender to the bite served with a baked potato and fresh green beans. Their dinner menu looks good with many great choices and their homestyle cooking leaves me planning a return visit. The wait staff are all very pleasant and sure to make your visit a memoriable one. Traveling along route 6a or route 28 will deliver you many options for delicious food here on Cape Cod, it's just a matter of knowing just what you might like. On a casual Sunday afternoon we decided we wanted the comfort and creaminess of the best Grapenut Pudding that I have ever tasted so we headed to Scargo's Cafe in Dennis on route 6 in Dennis. The test of any good restaurant and chef is to duplicate the taste of a an excellent recipe and keep thr flavors so that each experience is as good as the first time and for years Scargo's has always delivered for me. Their menu is ever changing and the chef stays current with the times and food trends to deliver interesting tasteful food blends. Just a look at their Apps and Starters always leaves me wanting to return as they offer some very inventive salads, Shrimp or Tuna Martinis, Smoked Old Bay Wings and even a Charcuterie Board with assorted Italian meats, cheeses, and spreads. It all has to start somewhere so, we decided to try their Clam Chowder which was simple and creamy with the fresh flavor of clams and potaoes. Their burgers have always been a favorite of mine so my friend Naomi decided on the Pretzel Burger served on a fresh "Pennsylvania" pretzel roll grilled to perfection and rich in flavor with lettuce, tomatoes and fries. Sue my seafood lover decided on the Grilled Swordfish flamed grilled with lemon butter, herbed rice and fresh grilled asparagus. It was simplistic and so good allowing all the fresh flavors to combine into a tasteful harmony. I decided on the Scampi Flatbread which was sautéed shrimp, garlic butter, tomato, basil, and mozzarella all grilled on top of a rustic flatbread. It was just the perfect bite of Italian goodness and with a glass of good Chardonnay, one could feel heavenly. They have many other good choices which you can find if you click on the menu icon here.
