Dr Walter M. Hewitson of Bridgewater died January 31, 2016 in the Life Care Center of West Bridgewater at the age of 82. Dr. Hewitson was born in Asbury Park, NJ. Son of the late Verna (Cecil) and William Hewitson. Walter was raised and educated in Neptune, NJ .
He received his bachelors degree from Miami University, Ohio, Masters from Cornell University, and his Doctorate in Botany from Washington University in St Louis. He was a professor at Bridgewater State University in the Biology Department for 30 years. A beloved teacher and colleague, he was honored with the Dr V. James DiNardo Award in Excellence in Teaching in 1997. Following his retirement, he continued to use his knowledge of botany to work as a wetlands delineation consultant, and served on the Conservation Commission.
Husband of the late Barbara L. (Hart) Hewitson. Dr Hewitson is survived by his sister Janet Cree of PA, his son William W. Hewitson of Norton and daughter Jennifer L Cheek of NH, and his grandson Jamie R Cheek.
An interactive Memorial Service will be held at the Central Square Congregational Church on Friday, February 5th at 4pm. The family requests that guests bring photos and/or memorabilia to share.
