Lorraine D. Duty, 101, longtime resident of Bridgewater, died peacefully while surrounded by her family on Jan. 16.
Lorraine was born on June 11, 1914 just before the start of WWI. She grew up in Boston and was a graduate of Dorchester Girls Latin High School, Class of 1932 and for most of the Great Depression she worked at RH Whites Clothing. During the height of WWII Lorraine and her girlfriends met a group of sailors at a roller skating rink, Lorraine hit it off well with one of them, and she would marry Scott Duty on Aug. 14, 1943.
Lorraine was a devoted homemaker but her passion for reading lead her to volunteer as a librarian at the Norwell Library. She later took the position of librarian at the South Shore Vo-Tech, retiring in 1979. She and Scott loved traveling and seeing the United States and Caribbean via cruises and vacations. Lorraine was always a great cook and baker, a dedicated mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a self-proclaimed, “connoisseur of restaurants”. She enjoyed life and being with her family and friends was the most important aspect of her happiness.
She was the daughter of the late John and Emma (Johnson) Long and the beloved wife of the late Scott Duty Jr., loving mother of John S. Duty and his wife Julia of KS, Dorothy H. Hile and her husband Frank of Bridgewater, Kenneth E. Duty and his wife Susan of Hanson, and Janice L. Harrold of Bridgewater. Proud “Grandma, of Marilyn Wiggin, Katherine Clifford , Kristin Coyle, Scott Hile, Heather Dias and Keith Harrold and “great grams”of 12 and sister of the late John A. Long and Helen M. Kirby.
Family and friends are cordially invited to a funeral home service on Thurs. Jan. 21 at the Prophett-Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 98 Bedford St. Bridgewater at 10:00am. Burial will be held at Mt. Prospect Cemetery and visitation will be on Wed. evening from 5-7pm.
